If you'd had breakfast at Pipes, and now wanted to check out the surf at Pipes, or Cardiff State Beach, in early November, this would be the view you'd see on your walk down. - View from Surf Rider, Solana Beach
- Heading south from Cardiff along Highway 101, the next North County beach town you come to is Solana Beach. Surf Rider is the big surf shop in this town. The light, as it often is in San Diego County, was exquisite. Oil on panel, 12" x 16". Price includes frame.

- View from Torrey Pines
- 16" x 20", Oil on Panel. Just south of Solana Beach, in Del Mar, is the truly beautiful Torrey Pines Preserve. Above the beautiful beach are trails winding through magnificent sandstone bluffs - home of the Torrey Pine trees. Adjacent to the preserve is the world famous golf course. When I'm there, I always imagine what it must have felt like to have been one of the California Indians who lived there long ago. This painting is also available as as a giclee print.

- Neighborhood, Downtown San Diego
- Here is another view of Our Lady of the Rosary, in Little Italy, and the Victorian architecture that is such a prominent feature of downtown San Diego. A building I absolutely loved is also featured in this painting - it is a giant, exuberant concrete structure which pays homage to the beautiful San Diego harbor, just down the street. Notice how the top of the building resembles the prow of a ship, and a castle ! all at once !! I just loved the conversation between the buildings, and their various influences: Mediterranean, Victorian, and Modern and Medieval !

- Canyons of Laguna
- 12" x 12", Oil on Panel. Laguna Beach (Orange County) was a haven for the fabulous early 20th century California Impressionists. Today, it is a thriving art town, with a wonderful museum featuring the work of it's esteemed former residents. A quintessential geographic feature of California is mountain ranges spilling to the coast.

- Crystal Cove, Spring
- 9" x 12", Oil on Panel. Just north of Laguna Beach, and south of Newport Beach, is Crystal Cove State Park. The park preserves beautiful stretches of beach, and beautiful Morro Canyon, where my heroes, the early 20th century California Impressionists, painted. In the spring, the verdant hillsides are splayed with flowers. This view looks south to Laguna, and was painted on an overcast spring evening.

- The Dory Fleet Fish Market
- 14" x 18", Oil on Panel. There still exists an authentic fish market on the beach, on weekends, near Newport Pier in Newport Beach, a swanky Southern California town with alot of yachts, and alot of surfers. I arrived at dawn and set up on the pier, and started painting as the first dories arrived back from sea and were trailered up the beach to unload their catch. Note the old fisherman high atop the boardwalk entrance to the market. Brian came down from the lifeguard tower after I'd been painting for hours to offer me sunblock for my legs!

- Study, The Dory Fleet Fish Market, Newport Beach
- Oil on Panel, 12" x 16". Because it was a complicated subject, I set out before dawn the day before the market to figure out where I would set up my easel the following morning, and to think about the painting. I was rewarded with the most beautiful sunrise, and painted this painting right on the beach.

- Rendezvous
- 18" x 14", Oil on Panel. I stayed at the 1920s Balboa Inn while in Newport Beach to paint The Dory Fleet Fish Market, and this table for two was in the courtyard. From this courtyard, one could cross the boardwalk to the beach, and Balboa Pier, scene of some of the best skimboarders and body surfers I have ever seen. And Catalina Island is visible on the horizon on a clear day. A perfect place for a rendezvous, I think.

- Morro Bay Sunset
- 9" x 12", Oil on Panel. I traveled to Morro Bay because it is the last remaining commercial fishing town left on the California coast, and because it is a preserve for migrating and native birds, and because it is a surf spot immortalized in The Beach Boys' song, "Surfing U.S.A." This is where they surfed.

- The Rock, Morro Bay
- 11' x 14", Oil on Panel. Known as The Seven Sisters, there is a string of huge volcanic "plugs" along Highway 101 in Central California. The Morro Rock is one of these, and it absolutely dominates the town, and harbor, of Morro Bay. In the previous painting, "Morro Bay Sunset", I painted the back side of this rock.

- The Carmel Mission
- 11" x 14", Oil on Panel. This is the most beautiful of all the California Missions. When I first saw it, I felt like I was back in ancient Rome. This is the first of two paintings I did of the mission; I painted it from the side in the evening, at sunset, and returned the next morning to paint it from the front. 80 year old Elizabeth O'Donnell, visiting from Michigan, and her lovely daughters, saw me painting the night before, and when they returned the next morning, and saw me again, they snatched the morning painting right from the easel ! A big hello to them, if they happen to read this !
